140 weight gear oil

They have Mobil 1 75-140 for, similar to the message above, at $14.99/quart. All the other syn gear oils in that weight neighborhood seemed to be 85-140. But the Mobil 1 matched the manual spec exactly at 75-140. Of course, 3 quarts are needed because the rear diff capacity is a wee bit over 2 quarts.

Differential Gear Lube, SAE 140 or SAE 85w140? I plan to change my differential oil before our summer trip. I have let it go too long since the last oil change. I have almost 40,000 miles on this oil and the book recommends 25,000. The book recommends SAE 90 for temperatures below 0 and SAE 140 for temperatures above 0. 5.0 out of 5 stars. 10 product ratings. - Royal Purple Max-Gear Synthetic Gear Oil SAE 75W-140, 01301, Choose 1,3 or 6 qt. $24.99 to $114.99. Top Rated Plus. Sellers with highest buyer ratings. Returns, money back. Ships in a business day with tracking.

That was my thinking also; currently using Mobil 1 75W-90 and might go to half 75W-140 in the rear differential, temps outside are warmer now. Yeah, the prices for the Mobil gear oil have really gone up, guess I could experiment with some Wally World cheapo gear oil first.

The 140 was "introduced" when IH switched from having a separate reservoir to using the rear end as a hydraulic reservoir. I would imagine that to avoid confusion, they also switched the recommended lubricant for the rear end of the 140 from gear oil to HyTran.

Real heavy gear oil but it makes a huge difference in my bike. I run that weight all year round and she shifts smooth as silk. And I haven't noticed any metal on my plug when servicing. 2006 Softail Night Train ... I don't use Amsoil in my tranny but the weight I like to run is 85/140.
